One of the questions I get asked often is how someone new to Ayurveda can incorporate it into their lives. After all, any new way of life, program or routine can seem daunting at first, especially as many of us already have way too much going on.
My answer is to keep it simple. The beauty of Ayurveda is that simple things can make a big difference. This means you don’t have to start doing everything at once –just start by doing something. And that something can be as simple as taking a different route to work in the morning. Yes, that simple.
I use the example of taking a different route to work in the morning as we are currently in the height of Kapha season. Kapha is heavy, slow, and dull – amongst other qualities. If we are having a Kapha imbalance – this can be manifested in that rut feeling and doing the same old thing every day. The amazing thing is you can shake your Kapha by something as simple as going to a different place to get your coffee in the morning or making something new for dinner – it sounds too simple to be true but I assure you it is!
Allow me to use myself as an example. I am not in the midst of a Kapha imbalance at the moment but I have a LOT of Kapha in me and it is even more predominant this time of year. As such, while I love to try out new things, I also LOVE my routine. For example, Saturday morning’s I on clockwork wake up, meditate, take my dog on a walk to the Union Square farmers market, buy my coffee from the same cart, drop off my compost, buy my veggies for the week, come home and head to a yoga or spin class. This is my routine and I love it.
But last Saturday I woke up and it was finally a beautiful spring day and I thought… I don’t HAVE to do the exact same thing I always do. So, I forced myself to shake it up. Instead, I took my dog to Central Park and let her run around during the off leash hours. I then headed back down town and had breakfast outside at one of my favorite standbys (a Kapha still needs to have some routine J), went to a different yoga class with a new teacher later in the afternoon and took the rest of the day from there.
And you know what? Life went on and I felt energized and had a great day. I will admit, this Saturday I went back to the Farmer’s Market routine BUT I mixed it up in a different way by not going to my usual morning yoga class but facing my fears of doing a head stand at an inversion workshop in the afternoon.
My point in sharing all of this is to say – Ayurveda can become a part of your life from something as simple as shaking up your routine. Are you feeling the Kapha rut? How can you shake up your routine today to get the Kapha moving? Let me know and if you do and feel a difference!
