Back in the day, I would travel with what my friends affectionately referred to as my “high maintenance bag.” The name was well deserved as I went everywhere with the widest spectrum of skin care products imaginable – face wash, toner, moisturizer (one for face, one for the body), body wash, body spray, eye cream .the list goes on and on.
Ever since discovering Ayurveda, however, my skin has never looked better and my supplies have been drastically reduced. My skin care regime now primarily consists of oil and flour. Yup. Oil and flour.
As skin is our largest organ, Ayurveda believes we should only put on our skin what we would ingest into our bodies – after all where do we think all of those skin products are going? Oil is the foundation and I use it anywhere and everywhere. And to answer everyone’s first question, no it does not cause breakouts.
In addition to using a variety of oil combinations for my daily Abhyanga, or oil self-massage, I also use the all purpose coconut oil as a makeup remover before washing my face every morning and night. A recipe for the homemade all natural face scrub I have been using as Pitta season sets in is below. I change it up with different types of flour depending on the season. This recipe is good for more sensitive or fiery skin that can ignite when the temperatures get warmer. Try it out and let me know what you think!
All Natural Face Cleanser
- 3 tablespoons almond meal
- 2 tablespoons chickpea flour
- 1 teaspoon organic orange peel powder (optional)
- Mix the ingredients in a bowl.
- Take a dime sized amount of the mixture in the palm of your hand and make a paste with a few drops of coconut or almond oil and water.
- Rub the paste between your two hands as you would soap and massage it onto your face and neck.
- Rinse with warm water.
Store flour mixture in a glass jar. Lasts up to four weeks.
