Almost two years ago in this post, I honestly blogged about my desire to turn back to my corporate career as my time away made me realize I missed it and was not ready to leave it cold turkey. If you were to infer my gap in posting here as confirmation that that happened you would be correct.
To fill you in, I am very fortunate and now have an amazing job at a market leading company with challenging work and people I am honored to call my colleagues. After getting through my issues of feeing like a failure because I gave up on pursuing a career in Ayurveda and wellness full time, I realized it was not my time yet and I still had work to do in the career I had invested almost 20 years in building. And there is no shame in that. It was the right choice for me and two years later it still is.
That said, I have approached my corporate career differently this time. Firstly, I was intent on bringing ‘my full self to work.’ And by that I mean, I let everyone know I am an Ayurveda counselor and mediation teacher and many of them have even seen this website. This was very different from how I approached previous roles where I was very focused on being who I thought I should be – not who I was. I even lead mediations sometimes at work – although need to be doing that more which I will talk about a bit later.
I also firmly believe a big part of the reason I continue to thrive at my corporate job is because of my wellness practices. Ayurveda still influences my life every day in terms of the food I eat and the habits I cultivate. For example, I bring my lunch to work as much as I can; try my best to not eat at my desk and I still mediate religiously – at least daily and strive for twice a day. I have also continued to deepen my yoga practice and am now a devotee to Ashtanga Yoga which has changed me more in three months than I ever thought possible. All of these tools allow me to handle a demanding work load and team to successful results.
Given all of this, I have been thinking a lot about how I can continue down my corporate path but also continue to keep up my activities here. At first, I was thinking I would just start a new blog and write there about all of my realizations I get daily through yoga (yes, daily, it’s crazy) and other thoughts that go through my head. And I started to do that but then realized there is no need. I already have a website and blog and yoga, Ayurveda and meditation are all connected. So, wherever the inspiration comes from, it is going to be documented here. I am also committing to bringing Ayurveda, meditation and yoga more to my day job and writing about that here as well. I continue to believe the corporate world is the world that needs the tools of Ayurveda, meditation and yoga the most, yet probably uses them the least because of a perception that they don’t fit in with that culture or are too ‘woo woo’ for that community.
Well, I am back in 2019 to make the case that corporate life and ancient wellness go hand in hand. And the way I am going to do that is just by telling stories from my life every day. Let’s see what happens!
