When I moved to California almost three years ago I had my heart set on one thing – a royal blue BMW convertible.
I have never thought much about cars but this car came to me in my dreams and I had to have it. Sun is out most of the year, the temp is over 60, you can get a tan while you drive – what could be better! To me a convertible was synonymous with California living.
Well, now that I have been here for more than three years I can tell you there is another type of car much more synonymous with California living – the hybrid electric vehicle. And I can’t even believe I am saying this, but I am going in tomorrow and trading in my dream convertible for a trusted four-door hybrid sedan.
The fact of the matter is, while I love my convertible, it is no longer practical. My new hybrid, however, will be SO practical. I will save a ton of money on gas and more importantly, as it is a clean vehicle I will be allowed to drive in the HOV lane. As a commuter who does not find the idea of carpooling even remotely attractive, the years of my life I can gain back by driving in the HOV lane are priceless.
I was mourning the loss of my dream car until I realized that dreams change. Three years ago, my dream was to move to California and drive around in my convertible. Now that I live and have a life here, my dream is to make my California commute as painless and cost effective as possible. Not as sexy as my initial dream, but hey, my first dream became reality, which means more practical dreams come to light.
