Ayurveda, a Sanskrit word that translates to “the science of life,” originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. It is the oldest continuously practiced health-care system in the world. WellBeings is committed to translating the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda to help clients regain balance in their physical and mental health through informed diet and lifestyle choices today.
Ayurveda believes everything in the universe is connected, and that health is achieved by staying in alignment with the rhythm of the world that surrounds us. For example, Ayurveda looks at everything in nature through the lens of the five elements—ether, air, fire, water, and earth. Ayurveda teaches us that humans are considered the microcosm of the macrocosm, and because the entire universe is comprised of the five elements, so are we.
The five elements manifest in people through the three doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The concept of doshas is unique to Ayurveda. In simple terms the doshas are energies that govern the human body. We all have all three doshas in us, but each individual is a unique combination – think of the doshas as our DNA.
The doshas can be explained by their elemental make up and qualities. Vata is a combination of ether and air; it is dry, light, cold, mobile and subtle. Pitta is a combination of fire and water; it is oily, sharp/penetrating, hot and spreading. Kapha is a combination of earth and water; it is heavy, dull, stable, cool and sticky. Our doshas can get out of balance due to our individual diet and lifestyle choices or in reaction to the world around us.
Ayurveda assesses the current state of your doshas and works to bring you back to the true state of your doshas so you can be your best self. The focus is on prevention and having the tools needed to rebalance yourself before an illness or disease manifests. It is simple, logical, and effective and a proven practice to help anyone today struggling with managing stress, fatigue, weight and overall wellbeing.
