Hope everyone is getting into the holiday spirit and gearing up for some time off and celebrations with loved ones. While the holidays are full of fun, they can also be full of stress and delicious – yet sadly unhealthy – habits. As you indulge in too many cookies and plans this season (because I by no means think you shouldn’t – life is about balance) here are some simple practices informed by Ayurveda that can help you not stray too far off track.
- Start each day with a glass of warm water with lemon. This simple habit will allow you to flush out last night’s fun at the start of each day – and keep your digestion on track.
- Schedule down time. The biggest complaint I hear from people is that they have too many plans around the holidays. While they are mostly fun plans, constantly being on the go can disrupt your Vata and lead to feelings of anxiousness, stress and exhaustion – sound familiar? Try scheduling a night in just as you would a night out with friends or family. Use it to sit home and watch a cheesy holiday movie, cook a healthy dinner, or just go to bed early. You will thank yourself for the gift.
- Plan a cleanse to kick off the New Year. See if you can take a few days to cleanse at the start of 2017 after the celebrations are over. Cleansing is an important part of Ayurveda as it allows us to give our digestion a break and to bring our doshas back into balance. I am planning a kitchari cleanse for the first five days of the year. Read more about how to cleanse with kitchari here and think about joining me. If not for five days, start with one. I will be blogging about it on the site so you can follow my journey.
