Skip ahead to two months before my birthday. I am out visiting California where I have decided to move (like how I slipped that in? more on that later 🙂 ) and one of my new neighbors invites me over for a cocktail party. I go and am talking to another guest and she informs me that she is holding a few silent retreats between now and year-end. I inform her of my birthday plan and would you believe it- she is hosting one on my birthday!
I went and it turned out to be exactly the birthday I wanted. I prepared myself for a new decade of life and a new beginning in my new home by spending minimal time on my phone and computer (except of course to accept birthday wishes); starting my day with a sunrise walk with my dog; spending six hours meditating and doing restorative yoga; and then closing the day with a new friend at a beautiful beachfront setting with champagne and homemade chorizo. And anyone who knows me knows I would do anything for homemade chorizo.
The space, peace and quiet was exactly what I needed and could be exactly what you need as we transition into the Vata season. The seasonal transition is an important time in Ayurveda which my birthday happens to coincide with. As Vata is mobile, we need to balance that rising quality with stillness and quiet – particularly as the season transitions. There is a lot written about food detoxes but mental and digital detoxes are just as important.
See if you can carve out a few hours, or even minutes, in the coming days for some peace and quiet. Fill the time with a deeper meditation; breath work; or even try to just turn off the TV, phone or computer and journal or watch the sunrise or set instead and notice how you feel. I assure you the space will provide you and your Vata more room to move and breathe and bring along with it some inner peace.
